Abstract:

Various applications and digital innovations have driven the development and evolution of passive optical networks (PON) to higher speeds. As the next-generation evolution of 10G PON technology, 50G-PON has essentially completed the standard formulation, and is currently in the process of technological and industrial breakthroughs. 50G-PON can realize coexistence and smooth upgrading with operators’ existing PON networks by means of wavelength division. For the GPON region and EPON region, operators can adopt G/XGS/50G-PON three-mode optical modules and 10GE/50G-PON two-mode optical modules respectively to realize the coexistence of multi-generation PON technologies in the same optical distribution network (ODN). For the future ultra-50G PON technology, this paper focuses on how to realize ultra-50G large bandwidth transmission capability over single wavelength. The current main candidate technology solutions include coherent and intensity modulation direct detection (IM-DD).
